Today I had my appointment with Social Security...the guy at the office was REALLY nice. Again, I was TOTALLY stressed at the office. I am so glad my wife was there to help me. I literally wanted to throw up I was so stressed. The guy said I do not qualify for SSI but it looks like I will for SSDI. With the family benifit money I am looking at $1,941 a month...not sure if that is good or not. Sucks that I have to wait TWO YEARS for Medicare once my checks start coming. Both my doctors said they would be shocked if I was turned down even though this is the first attempt. Even the guy at Social Security strongly hinted that I had nothing to worry about. I mean good grief, I gave him 8 doctors that have seen me regarding this in the last year and brought in all 9 of my prescriptions for him to see.
Anyway, I still won't know anything for 90 days and if approved will have to wait another 60 days beyond that (approximatly) for the money to start coming in. In the mean time I still have Short term disability from my employer coming in.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I don't know how I feel.
I'm glad that it looks like you will get the monetary help you need, but I'm sad because of the reason.
Take a deep breath, put on some jammies and a good movie and just chill for the evening!
(or hang around here, that would work!)
You have to have less than $2000 in savings at the time of your application to get SSI while you are waiting for your ssdi
As for the firefighting...understand that was not my primary job and although I got a small amount of pay when I go out on a call, I was classified as a volunteer. My "real: job was working for the U.S. Department of Energy through a contractor. In that job I was removed from the Operations position involuntarily due to my diagnosis and the risk of the job and forced into a office job I have no expierence in. My inability to concentrate, rapid cycling, panic attacks, inability to deal with coworkers, etc all all reasons why they are considering. Also the work I do is critical for accuracy from a enviromental protection standpoint...mistakes are not an option. My condition makes it so my doctors can no longer garuntee that type of performance.
Since the fire department does not give "substatial pay" the Social Security guy said it would be ok for me to continue once I am approved (hopfully in February). He agreed it would be a good idea to take a leave of absense until then so nothing gets complicated, but he would be the one to decide if it was a problem to resume after that and he said he would not see a problem with it.
So...long story short...Hopefully I get to go back to it someday soon.
Somehow, I received SSI for a month or two after I was approved, but the SSI was taken away because I made too much in SSDI to receive both. So for a month or two, I had a medical card. I should have had all my dental work done then grr! After that, it was taken away and now I only get SSDI. I forget how long it took me to get my back pay, but it wasn't too long. Thankfully, I was approved without the help of a lawyer, so I didn't have to fork over any money for that.
You may not neccessarily wait two years for medicare. I have read where some people only waited 12 to 18 months. Now if you paid that extra insurance to pay a full check to you while on disability then apply for that. TV uses a duck in one of the companies names...Ad???
