My bf is having a hard time coping with his heightened manic state. It happens about this time every year and can last for months. He has had numerous panic/anxiety attacks and one that was really bad. I took him to the ER for that one. He is taking ativan and that is the only thing that can make him feel comfortable, normal and good at this point in time. However, he is an addict and a recovering alcoholic and ativan is highly addictive. He OD on ativan one day and it was scary. He was talking nonsense and hallucinating and couldn't even stand on his own two feet. Can anybody relate to this and any advice anyone can give is appreciated. Any alternatives to Ativan that might be less addictive? What drugs do you find help best with extreme manic states?

I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...
