I have not been DX'd with this disorder myself. But a very good and close friend of mine has. We were a couple at one time for a 6 yr period. We parted and remained good friends. Sometimes its very hard to maintain a relationship with him. He is in treatment but I am really not sure how compliant he is. His moods effect every aspect in his life. How do I help ?? How do I know when to help or back off ??? Please help me to understand this disorder because he will not talk to me about it very much. He says he feels shame about it. If any of you could give me advice about how to deal with someone in your life that has this disorder....I would greatly appreaciate it. How do I be good friend to someone with this disorder ??????????

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Most BP'ers don' want to accept the diagnosis! They have a disease! Whoa! That's hard to accept! YOU have to go see his psychiatrist, too. Make a mutal understanding. If you don't understand, his disease... you won't comprehend his pain and suffering. I HATE to be brutal, but get your ass in gear. If you want to live with a BP boyfriend... you have to make sacrifices! Option? NONE! If ya wanna make your relationship to work... find out what "turns his crank"... and live with it!
I have listed them in one of my journals. I wish I had the resources then and maybe things would have worked out different. A free newsletter and information on this can be found at www.bipolarhappens.com
I recommend a book called The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know (Paperback) by David Miklowitz, (Guilford Press). There are used copies at Amazon for around $12. Good luck. It is nice to know someone cares. (The book would make a nice gift to him)
Maybe what MTP might be trying to say is we can be hard to live with at times but with support and understanding we are worth a chance ...
