has anyone fasted for spiritual (not weight-altering) purposes?
what effect did it have on you?
i've fasted before and not needed to sleep but had TONS of energy...was sleeping only a few or couple hours a night and getting all kinds of things done that i normally wouldn't have been able to do. And my mind was so clear and positive and hopeful...AND i could smile (usually difficult for me)...and *sense* God's presence.
is this a normal spiritual experience or something that is indicative of a mental health problem?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

but also, a juice fast can be an incredibly healthy way to cleanse and detox yr system.
but you need to juice up lots of fruits and veggies to get yourself the nutrition you need. don't just straight-up fast.
and i don't know how healthy juice fasting is for us bp's anyway...
but when i did a juice fast i was remarkably clear headed and energized on the third day.
Somehow, I missed that a loss of appetite can be a symptom of being 'up'.
I went hypo about 5 days ago and stayed up for about 50 hours and felt an incredible sense of well being!!!
I never am very hungry during the daytime and often don't eat until nightfall. But, boy!!! Since being put on Seroquel, do I ever make up for it then!!!!
Well, when I went hypo, the Seroquel had no effect on me at all, and at one point, I realized that I had forgotten to eat for 2 days. Even when I realized that, I somehow managed to not relate it to my BPism.
It was only when I was at my Pdoc's Thursday and told him that I was hypo and one of the questions he asked me was 'had I been eating' that I made the connection.
I think it's certainly a possibility that you went hypo.
Fasting helps me spiritualy because during that time I am in meditation mode and I block out everything negative to me and get deep into Gods word and yes his presence. Its awsome isnt it?
The sleep part maybe has to do with a manic episode but no appitite umm,I say thank God for that because sometimes when I fast someone walks in the door with McDonalds or some type of food.LOL
I too feel the way you do after fasting, isnt it nice?
Any fast for any lenght of time should be broken the same length. A seven day fast should take seven days before you are reeating meat again.
Being hungry beyond my wildest dreams and thinking I could live forever I was eating meat within a couple of days.
I am paying for that bullshit now with massive stomach problems.
Maybe that is why so many religious figures have so many prophecies after fasting?
I have experienced the great energy, clarity of mind, and happiness while fasting that you have described.
In fact, I am fasting right now! What I am doing is alternate day fasting (ADF), where I eat one large balanced vegetarian meal every 48 hours.
This way, in one month, you fast for 15 days instead of fasting for 15 days straight.
Basically the spiritual side of what happens during fasting is that all your 7 chakras get cleansed which is equivalent to your subconscious mind getting cleansed.
This in turn increases the prana or chi energy throughout your body and thus you may experience a brightness in your brain that makes you have little sleep.
From what I have experienced, this is slightly different than mania. When I became manic from not sleeping, I was listening to exciting music over and over. Whereas during fasting, what I experience, is a type of self-awareness and very few thoughts. But the thoughts that I do get are very creative, like a creative scientist.
I think there is a link between the manic state and the high experienced while fasting. In fact, the bipolar episode for many including myself is a kind of spiritual experience.
Indeed, fasting for 25 days straight has cured over 7,000 Schizophrenics in Russia. And a manic state is said to be brought under control with 5 days of fasting.
I think that the cure for bipolar disorder is to feast and fast every 48 hours. This way you make sure that you are still eating, but you also make sure that you are also fasting. Thus, you remain nourished and improve digestion, assimilation, and elimination of food, but also you get to creatively experience a type of spiritual "mania" that is under control.
Indeed, enlightenment is a type of subjective mania!
I have improved a lot in the past 3 weeks of alternate day fasting. In fact, the only medication I am taking is a low dose of Risperdal. And from what I have read Inositol that is naturally found in chickpeas and brown rice is more effective. So I am thinking of tapering off of the Risperdal later on as well.
I have found that the real way to get out of bipolar, at least for me, is to basically incorporate a lot of fasting. I was able to trace back a number of years and realize that eating food created a lot of mood swings and concentration problems for me. So I think that the so-called manic state of not sleeping and not eating is actually the body getting healthier and detoxing itself from all the junk we were eating before. Indeed, I used to eat 2 large pizzas at once and even 10 bean burritos from Taco Bell all at once.
Anyways, what I am trying to say is that the manic state is our body and mind getting healthier as our subconscious knowledge and fears (such as the government watching us and the illuminati, etc.) rapidly come out.
I think, therefore, the problem is not that we don't sleep or don't eat, but rather that we are unaccustomed to fasting.
Once we get used to fasting, such as fasting every other day, a manic state will not turn into a delusion but rather into genius.
In fact, loving life itself is when we are in the moment and don't want to go to sleep.
Thus, I believe that fasting is the cure for nearly all ailments including bipolar and schizophrenia.
My concentration has greatly improved and I am able to grasp deep intellectual science subjects now, whereas in the past I was not able to grasp them.
I also recommend daily warm water enemas along with fasting which helps clear the mind of depression as well as re-integrate the root chakra with the crown chakra.
The solution for bipolar is not to deaden our brains with these tranquilizing meds and so called "mood stabilizers" but rather to awaken our body with the cosmic energy through careful feasting and fasting to awaken the genius that lies inside us.
Thanks for reading my ideas!
Oh yeah, I am returning back to medical school to become an orthomolecular psychiatrist who uses traditional medicines but weans them off gradually into a healthy routine of fasting and meditation.
