... well anyways, there's been discussion about this topic, but I just wanted to say that, personally, I was relieved to read this....
"Experts agree on one crucial issue. the chance a child of a bipolar parent will inherit the illness appears relatively small."
"More than two-thirds of people with bipolar say they have at least one close relative with the disorder or with unipolar depression, suggesting a genetic component"
"Research found that BP offspring had only a 2.7 PERCENT CHANCE of being dX'D with BIPOLAR. But they did have a 50% chance of suffering from some type of psych. disorder... adhd, anxiety, or dapression .. COMPARED TO 29 PERCENT IN THE GENERAL POPULATION..."
sO that says to me that our kids do have a 21% higher chance than the rest of the population, but it doesnt mean they'll have BP, and it doesn't mean they'll get a disorder at all.
my grandmother was thought to be BP by family (she wouldnt get treatment) but none of her four children have it ... unfortunately we know it stays in the genes because I ended up getting it............ so what was my point? who knows, I had just thought the chances of actual BP were gonna be higher for my kids, and i'm glad it's only 2.7 percent.!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
my youngest has trouble with ADD, but my husband also has it... so who knows... It's a lot of them modeling behavior also, and how much stress they are under that can trigger symptoms.. so good luck to u, and keep being hopefull!!
Heads up: there's all kinds of controversy on the kids-with-bipolar subject, obviously, but reading I'm doing right now shows a really disconcerting pattern of diagnosing kids who actually have BP with conduct disorder...harder with the ADD/ADHD thing, as a high percentage of BP kids DO have ADHD, but worth also looking into the possibility of an ADHD kid ALSO having bipolar, as you might be able to head off future problems. What I'm reading says that kids who later develop BP show different signs of it than you see in adult BP; unusual sensitivity, hyper-imagination and difficulty telling fantasy from reality, very rapid mini-mood-swings, withdrawl alternating with hyper-social behavior, and a bunch of others.
I developed BP signs WAY young; my pdoc thinks I developed full-blown around 11yrs. It happens.
(That's just what I do) I've always read/heard much higher numbers, like 30% probability of diagnosis with one BP parent and 60%
probablility with both parents BP.
I'm diganosed manic depressive and my sister is diagnosed schizophrenic. That's 100%, right?
but yes, genes are handed down in such a sporatic way... i was just glad to see that the chances weren't hugely above the 'regular' population.. i am scared for my daughters. but confident with my knowledge.. and with today's science i would never say they are going to 'suffer'! that's one difference i have than most
so anyone can devolop BP it dosen't just have to be inherited
Seriously, that's an awesome stat to pass along! Sooooo many BPs hold on to that 50% statistic and run with it....or run away with it!
Cheers to Adrienne!
