Back Pain Support Group
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. In fact, about 3 in 4 adults will experience back pain during their lifetime! The term back pain includes pain affecting the neck, midback and low back. Acute back pain may begin suddenly with intense pain but typically lasts fewer than three months. I am currently taking 5/325 percocet 3x a day for major back complications due to Spina Bifida. I had NEVER taken any narcotic before in my life. I am also on a lidocaine patch, and 2 muscle relaxers. I am worried about getting addicted, because I am going to be on them awhile (at least a few months). Has anyone ever had that happen? How long do you think it took?

I found morphine to be the best at round the clock care. I do 15mgs extended release version twice daily and it works. My back is cooked and at least I can walk now. I tried to stop for a month but the pain was to bad so I went back. I have been on them since 2000. I have never had to do over 15mgs per tablet to this day. I really do not like pain. The other thing I did was buy a new Sleep Comfort Adjustable Bed. Head and Feet adjust, massager, wave motion and lifetime warranty on the motor. I spent tons more on meds before the morphine, I do not even have to do the muscle relaxors anymore. My legs are raised and my spine is bent so no cramping in my body. Worth the investment. You can have them custom made for which mattress you want. Now I just hurt a little when I try to walk more than 10 blocks.

I have been on vicoden, darvocet and skelaxin for long periods of time in the past. I have never had a problem discontinuing any meds. I think it depends on your predisposition toward addictions. If you are a person who gets easily addicted, then you might have problems. Most narcotics are highly psychologically addictive. Be sure to work with you Dr. closely during this time, so nothing happens to you.

When pain meds are used for pain, they are not addictive. Your body can get used to them, to where you have to be weaned off, but theat normally takes a very long time. Like someoene that has been on pain meds for a tear or longer. Then it also depends on the person. Just like some ppl can drink a case of beer and be totally normal and the next person can drink one or two beers and be wasted. SO it also has to do with body tolerance as well. We are all different, so it is hard to say for sure. But either way, I wouldnt give it much worrry when you are using it to control not for recreation. I have been on pain meds for well over a year now for back and I DO NOT crave the high or anything. Matter of fact, I hate the high feeling. I ran out of pain meds not long ago and I was scared of what my body was going to do. I was fine. Your doctor will monitor you. Just remember not to take more thn prescribed. If the meds start to not control your pain, talk to your doctor about it. Good Luck and Happy Holidays. Julie

That's what I am afraid of. Taking them for so long that I get used to them and they stop working. Not so much that I have to take them when I'm not hurting, but almost getting on a regular schedule of taking them, even for slight pain. Thanks Julie...Happy Holidays to you too! Benjamun, I do not get addicted easily, so I should be fine. Just nervous is all, because this is all new to me.

hi mgo I have been taking oxycontin for aboout a year......it is what is in percocet......I take a total of 100mg a day.....I am very much dependent on them ....when I don't take it my body lets me know.....I guess from my point I know i am dependent but I don't see myself as addicted......your body gets used to taking narcotics and when stopping there will be some discomfort but as others have sugguested as long as you work with your doctor and wean off you should be ok......

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
