The term back pain includes pain affecting the neck, midback and low back. Acute back pain may begin suddenly with intense pain but typically lasts fewer than three months. Usually, chronic back pain is persistent, steady, and...

I have been on vicodin for the last 4 months for back pain with a a few breaks here and there, and I am now on vicoprofen. My Doctor told me I need to "ration" my pills (or something to that affect) and take ibuprofen inbetween doses. He suggested I take no more than 2 a day, one in the morning and one in the evening if I fel that I need it. Well, today I decided I would attempt to go without it first thing in the morning. Not only did my back start to hurt, but I also started to get kind of depressed and irritable. Has anyone else had this experience? Is it withdraw? What should I do, ration the meds, or take them as needed as directed? I just get so frustrated! grrrr

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

I only take my meds at night to help me sleep.
Be careful of the ibuprofen. I can cause more damage than good.
I haven't taken the meds you have. Maybe you can ask for something different like hydrocodone.
Best of luck to you. I know what you are going through. I share in your frustration because all you want is for the pain to stop or at least ease up.
I've been taking mine off and on. I try to use it for emergancy purposes only, but my back is starting to hurt more and more due to work and stuff. I know that it helps, but it leaves me with this terrible drug residue the next morning.
What I don't like about this drug is that it seems like you need more and more to help with the pain - which is why I started backing off of it this summer and relying more on my muscle relaxers. The muscle relaxer only helps me sleep and helps with spasms.
My goal is to be med-free but I don't see that happening any time soon if ever. I'm worried about the effect these drugs have on my liver. Since my prescriptions are running out, I am going to have find a new doctor (we recently moved.)
I really think the feeling of being depressed and irritable has more to do with the pain and the frustration of not being able to find relief.
When I saw my spine specialist he told me I was not ready to stop the pain management. He also said that advil dries out your skin and helps you gain weight. I have had both those things happen.
I hope I helped.
