Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
Yoga for the Special Child

As a Yoga Teacher I have made a decision to get more involved in the Autistic community by helping others, Parents and children, via YOGA FOR THE SPECIAL CHILD. I will be taking the Intensive week long training in 2008, and have already gotten involved with the DFW Center For Autism, taking the Verbal shaping workshop. Many people I meet and talk with are curious about Yoga for their child, so a way to begin is to get the book 'Yoga for the Special Child' by Sonia Sumar. You can visit her website: http://www.specialyoga.com/
On my end we will be working on a guide line that we can share on line by offering 5 poses that anyone can get started on working with their child. It will be fun, and it will be like play time. It helps them with a focus, and they love it because they get attention. And another wonderful thing is the parents too can get a little stretching in.
If any one has had any luck with Yoga in their world with their wonderful child, please share with us!
Thanks
Bright Blessings

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I have been told for years to teach on line, but the magic of yoga needs to be personally shared. I think the book I have
"Yoga for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders" by Dion and Stacey Betts really is good because as we are realizing ASD kids are different than general disabilities. This book offers a complete explaination of the essential elements of Hatha Yoga and a set of postures that are well rounded for a good work out for both kids and parents. Look in your neighborhood because to learn yoga takes someone to show you that basics and then you will keep seeking out the information. If you practice Hatha Yoga Daily you will change your life in ways you can't imagine. But will it make you a good typist? No, so Yoga teachers usually work in health clubs or yoga centers or like me in the home servicing my neighbors or find a teacher at www.Yogaalliance.org
The next step we will ad touching the toes. "INHALE" arms up to the sky, "EXHALE" forward bend (Utanassana) to touch the toes, (the knees can be bent here, and you can even hang out here a bit, head upside down and breath, giggle, laugh, keep it fun, and then "INHALE" up reaching to the sky, "EXHALE" arms down at the side, then play with reinforcer. This became hours of fun, whether they joined in or not, and we adults got some breathing and stretch time in. The clown in me tried to make it fun and exciting. The children laughed and played and would loose their focus allot, but generally stayed interested.
"INHALE" up, "EXHALE" down, "INHALE" up...then relax....play...giggle, and come back to it again.
A concept is to periodically throughout the day just do it: Arms up, "INAHLE"; "EXHALE" bend over and reach toward the ground, "INHALE UP" and reach for the sky. Do this three times, and then move on with what ever you are doing...Everybody gets to breath and stretch. And in most cases the child feels focused on...they love attention. Make it a game, make it fun...let me know if anyone has some fun results!
Have a strong and energetic day!
Good Luck -Cynthia
