Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

Morning....:o) I'm new...have had thoughts for a long time about some of the 'different' things my one son does. I think he is stimming. Tell me if I am even close to the mark! He sometimes gets excited....he walks stiffly, flaps his hands, has a tightness about him. Sometimes he gasps for breath....and makes a grimace face. I've talked to the pediatrician, she says she doesn't see it..talked to family...they do! Am I using the wrong terminology? FINALLY in Jan 2008 we are getting some testing underway...but I wanted to ask you....the actual experts on this!!! You live it the Dr.'s don't...what do you think?
PS...he is a hyperactive 12 y/o...has learning disabilities...but is wayyy advanced in other areas...tell me what you all think...thanks Cynb

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Good luck with the quest to do the best thing. I'm sure you will!

Now about stimming...
Heck yeah it could deffinetly be stimming. The breathing even as well, just maybe that part is his reaction to the stimming.?
Ya know what... Docs dont see what we see, unless we video it!
That is an idea i wish i thought of before.
Good luck Mom!
Also, for the one who posted the site link, thanks :D. To me, it is accurate and useful to describe stimming, but that is just my opinion.
He has stims too...repeats phrases over and over. :)
