Should i be worried?

My 18 month old boy is not yet talking. Also sometimes walks on tippy toes and holds his hands together like he is washing them. He babbles alot and seems to carry a conversation with me in gibberish along with hand gestures( waving in a direction and pointing). He also started to grasp one of my fingers and lead me to whatever he wants thats out of reach or to pull me down to play or pick him up. As much as i try to read to him or play name games he shows no interest. This worries me because i have 2 autistic nephews.
He seems to have met other milestones on time. He has great eye contact, plays with adults and other kids his age, smiles when smiled at, eats solo with a spoon, loves to play peekaboo and hide and seek. in the last three weeks he has learned to show me his nose, eyes, ears and mouth. just learned to make rasberry sound to let me know when he is going potty.
Should i be worried?

Ugghhhh.....I remember the months of uncertainty.I say if your really concerned take him to a developmental psychologist.My dipshit doctor kept saying"he will grow out of it"meanwhile we were losing precious early intervention time.
Don't worry,I have 2 kids with autism and we are still truckin' and my children are workin sooooo hard.No worries.

my son did all that too. but yea I'm not a doctor to say for sure or not. get him tested.

Take him to a neuro-devolopmental, my doctor just like concreter said everything was fine and don't worry. Well you should worry if you are questioning yourself. Take him asap. My boys were like your son and although they are both on the spectrum they are doing great. Remember it is a very very wide spectrum. Early intervention is key time. Good Luck Denise

Wow a lot that you said caught my attention to think he doesn't have Autism and you could be very worried, cause you have two nephews w/Autism and that is a valid concern. The good things your son displays that a child w/Autism usually doesn't is being picked up, eye contact, social interaction, playing peek a boo, and and letting you know when he's going potty is good. If you feel a really concerned and he keeps doing things you feel an Autistic child does why not ask parents of your nephews where in your area where you can take your son to be seen by a doctor for children w/Autism. It's never to early..

Lots of very positive things going on with your little one. That's great!! I agree with the rest of the group...it doesn't hurt to have him evaulated. My son also had alot of "normal" skills at 18 months...but some of them begin to disappear as time went on. He was diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2. I don't think you can ever be to safe you know.

Yes he does have alot of positive devolopment... but no words, tippy toes no interest in learning? Compared to the positives, do these raise red flags with out a dought?

Imust say some of the things your son is doing, mine did not do even at nearly 3 yrs. of age. However, you need to ask tour pedi. if he is developing at the expected rate, and express any concerns that you have. It is better to know early on, as intervention is of most importance in the early stages! Good luck to you, and a prayer!

Better safe than sorry, get a good ECI evaluation and take it from there! He may just be speech delayed and a bit of SID, sensory integration, but those are things that early intervention can help.. When he is a bit older you will be able to tell more, but don't wait to get help with the speech.

The other day at the Verbal shaping workshop they addressed this issue, and was very positive about the gibberish...and encouraged it, leading in the direction of shaping the sounds: BBB, Buh Buh, Bah bah, leading to Ball. It's good sounds are coming out! I'm not a Parent, just a student, and teacher... Good Luck!!!!
I also have a friend who has a child that has not been diagnosed with anything and she did not talk until she was 3 and then it was close to full sentences.

I agree with pcmarie he doesn't have a lot of the signs. My son never played with others (still doesn't), no eye contact, no peek a boo, he was always quiet and kept to himself. I'm not a doctor, I wish you luck.

Hi MarkyC...your post stuck with me last night and some things came to me about what you posted fromthe workshop I took the other day on Verbal shaping, teaching to speak....so I thought I should appropriately post it in the ARt of Verbal Shaping log. Check it out there, I hope it helps you... what they discussed I felt would help any child so it might be more food for thought... keep us informed as the months go on. And don't forget some sign langauge techniques, good for all children. There are some great videos for the kids to watch and interact with that you can buy on line...

Yes i have bought baby einstien series dvd's almost all disks have signs along with the words. The problem with this as i mention b4 is that he will watch for 30 seconds and then off to play with his toy car or whatever he can find. No interest at all. but just from the repetitive play he has learned the sign for milk. Also he is signing with confusion of the signs. For instance, open hand touch top side of head is dada. Well he uses that sign when he hears the music on the start of the dvd? even after days of showing him the sign and saying dada dada dada. Where is the art of verbal shaping log?

Markyc there are many ways the kids are affected, and I know my typical kid was a late talker. For me the issue of head banging fits sent me looking for help for Oli. I do wish I had started my late talker with speech therapy sooner than I did. I highly recommend you find the state funded ECI in your area and get hooked up with the evaluation, asap.

I visited my sister today and my little son marcos played very well lots of laughter and sweat. I have two autistic nephews 1 severe 16 y.o. the other 11 y.o. mild. And 2 others 3 y.o. and 17. Marcos and the 3 y.o. dont play well together. they always want what the other has. He played great with my mildly autistic nephew. My sister did notice something that i thought was normal play as stemming.....he was laying down and rolling the toy car back and forth in front of his face. He would do this for about 1 or 2 minutes then find another toy to play with. 20 minutes later back to the car. She thinks there is definitly cause for concern. And dont worry to much. I have an appointment tuesday with case worker to start paperwork on the evaluation. I just cant wait for him to start getting the help he needs regardless of the disability he may have!!! not the best of days.

    I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

    I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
