how to have a BM in the toilet when potty traing?

Hi, my four year old finally is starting to make some progress with potty training after trying for years. Anyways, he is in underwear now and will go pee on the toilet when I take him but still won't tell me when he has to go but just won't poop on the toilet. We have managed occasionally to get him to have a BM on the toilet with candy as a reward but usually he just won't sit long enough and jump off the toilet and go and poop in his underwear. He hated the feeling and then comes to me to get changed. How do I get him to care and want to poop on the toilet. My husband has suggested after he goes in his underwear we wash his bum with cold water or some other unfavorable response. Any ideas??

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Yes, we did throw a party. :)
It took him a little longer to wipe efficiently. Our experience has always been that this stuff comes in time, and using aversives just hinders the process.
Well.............
its good he has some success he will get idea soon it sounds like. I do not think washing him off with a cold cloth is a good idea. Kinda harsh, for someone who doesnt understand the concept yet or has a sensory issue of doing a poop on the toliet. So ya have to think they way he thinks, it might be scarey to him, or feel very uncomfortable.
A distraction may help him,
toys books even a portable dvd player. (thats what worked for steven for pee on toliet.)
then praise praise and a poop party!!
when he goes in his pants, dont say anything to him, just clean him up in the bathroom put the poop in toliet have him see what your doing. Not alot of attention for poor behavior, tons of attention for doing the right thing :)
Incentives are powerful motivators. Apparently, not only can they get an autistic child to whiz in the toilet, they can also teach him theory of mind!
