Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
the hand flapping may not ever go away entirely but it can be controlled to an extent. i think you should not always try to stop all of the handflapping as it is a way of coping. but maybe if there is another way to release that emotion maybe jumping up and down when excited could help? that would be age appropiate and probably more appropiate socially. buti do not know if it would still give same release as the flapping does. i have never tried jumping.
i have become more aware of my autism and the things that are not appropiate to others as i have got older. i wish it did not matter what other people think about what i am doing and honestly wish people would just let me be me. but i have tried to control my own flapping. sometimes things get so intense in my feelings it comes out before i can stop it. i have never done it when angry but i have seen others do it when angry. i have only done it when i am extremely anxiety or excited. mostly anxiety is whenn i do it the most. and sometimes when stimming about something i really like. i do not get excited about things very often.
the specialist that diagnosed him at age 3 said he would probally not do it as much as he gets older and it might change too. well, he is 4 now and it has not changed, but he does do it less...
My 10-year old son has AS & used to flap all the time when he was about the age of your grandson. As others here have posted, he did it whenever he was excited.
I used to make him aware by asking if he was planning on flying away. He'd laugh & immediately stop.
The flapping itself stopped around 1st or 2nd grade.
