Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

I took Sam last week to the behavioral pediatrician who we were referred to by his regular pediatrician and he wants to refer him back to him. He told me that was how they did it here in North Carolina and that if I had any concerns, the pediatrician could refer him back.
It really ticks me off when the pediatricians don't want to treat it because they say it's a behavioral issue and refer out and then the ones who can help are so overwhelmed, most are not taking new patients.
When is everyone going to get it??? It's not a behavioral issue; it's a children's issue. period.
I'm very tired of being told by doctors that they do not know what causes autism. I'm convinced now that we will never be told and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the government already knew and is not saying.
I don't have the time, energy or strength to worry about what caused it/ I want to focus on what they "the experts" are now going to do for the millions of children who have it now. How are they going to help them? What services are they going to provide for my child and please God do not tell me it's another research project. I'm all for research and I'm all for helping out but to me, there are too many people going too many different directions. like my dad said, we must have a united front.
Sorry if I rambled. I just get tired of getting somewhere with sam and then have yet another road block put in front of me

I hear you!!! You are right they probrably (the gov.) already know. But know what? What services are our children going to get and how do we get the services. The doctors and insurance agencys make you jump through fire to get what is needed for our children. It really sucks when you know what services are needed but know one is willing to shell out any money. Where is the funding supposed to come from? How are we families supposed to pay for all of the services that we know our kids need? Anyway, I know where you are coming from. hugs Denise

My son has gotten the best of care with a psyc. doc. at MHMRA here in Texas. He has a Pedi. as well , and he is involved but NO WAY SHAPE NOR FORM LIKE DR. MALSEED! SHE HAS CALLED ME ON THE WEEKENDS TO CHECK UP ON HIM, ETC. Talk about a difference in care ! MHMRA also provides services to persons with autism, not just mental retardation. I would say your best bet is with them! I know they take madical card, insurance plans, and if low income the services are free. Hope you check into it, I will say it has saved Alex and I many a times!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
