Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

My daughter 3 1/2 was just diagnosed with pdd-nos.
All this is new to me. We have some behavior issues, she is severely impared with her language, and fine motor skills. They told us she was at a 12mo. level. She doesn\'t feed herself, and isn\'t potty trained. Any advice, info, available programs would be helpful. I am so lost, and don\'t even know where to start.

A friend sent this to me..As far as I can see, grief will never truly end.It may become softer overtime, more gentleand some days will feel sharp. But grief will last as long as Love does - ForeverIt's simply the way the absence of your loved onemanifests in your heart. A deep longing accompaniedby the deepest Love some days. The heavy fog mayreturn and the next day, it may recede.Once again, it's...

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
Been there, done that. My daughter was diagnosed at 4, with ADHD, PDD-NOS and Dysgraphia. The therapist who did the testing was a resident, and her supervisor \"wasn\'t comfortable\" with the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome so she wasn\'t allowed to diagnose that, at least on paper. VErbally, that is what was said. WE were also told that she DID NOT have ADHD,even though the diagnosis said she did, her problem was ASperger\'s.
So what to do now? Research will be your best friend. You will be your child\'s advocate the rest of her growing up years. Find out all you can, go to support group meetings, look for Autism professionals in your area.
We are currently looking into RDI - Relationship DEvelopment Intervention which is home based program that parents do with theri autistic children with the help of a trained consultant. For more info: www.connectionscenter.com
Also, check out www.aspergersyndrome.net for a ton of resources. www.asperger.com is Autism/Asperger Publishing, they have some wonderful books.
I would highly reccommend you purchase Tony Attwood\'s Asperger Syndrome, THe OASIS guide and also a social stories book by Carol Gray.
Also look into a Special Ed preschool, your child will need OT and Speech, probably PT as well. Also find out if there is someplace in your area that provides Sensory Integration Therapy, it worked wonders for our child.
Good luck and hang in there, your journey has just begun.
PS its up to you of course, but I resist absolutely all attempts to medicate my daughter. She doesn\'t act out violently or have mood swings like some Autistic kids do.
