Autism / Autism Spectrum Support Group
Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.

My daughter is going to be having some test before long. we have dealt with behaviors that are aggresive and other things since she 4, we have been in and out of therapy. on meds, but know one ever tested her. they just threw out a diagnoses by what we were telling them and what they were seeing, we are seeing someone knew that is a child physc. she said this has gone on long enough. that the docters should have had her tested a long time ago, she is now 12. can anyone tell me what to look for, I am just wondering, because autism/aspergers is one thing they are looking at and for, thank you

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I feel for you/
There is no blood test that can be done to test for Autism.
It is behaviors, that they look at and go from there.
But from the sounds of it the doc you have now will hopefuly give you some answers and guide you.
Write everything down you can about your daughter.
Wishing you peace and support on your journey.
You have been through alot already and my heart goes out to you. One website that might be helpful as you try to educate yourself about autism is http://www.firstsigns.org/.....They have screening tools and evaluations that you can download and read for yourself...
Also, I would encourage you to visit
http://www.foggyrock.com/
It is a social site exclusively for families and professionals who love and/or work with children on the autism spectrum
(which includes Asperger's).....You will have access to parents and professionals there and might find some support.
Here is a criteria that is used to diagnos. It helped me with my boy. It was posted last week on DS by one of our ASD friends,.
I hope you find the help and answers you need.
I recommend that you look for a book by Alice Miller "The drama of the gifted child" She talks a lot about aggressive behavior on children and what to do to help them. Good luck
My daughter is 6 and has just been diagnosed with Aspergers and to be honest it has been a massive relief because now we can respond to her behaviour knowing what may have triggered it and why. It makes life easier, and having a diagnosis also seems to extend your ability to cope. Good Luck.
this IS a site to come for advise, support, and most of all UNDERSTANDING from people like yourself dealing with autism in your family. for the most part, that is what you will get here. welcome and dont hesitate to post here anytime when you need too!
Agressive behaviour is very very common in Autistic kids, as is limited use of speech, but then it's also common in non-autistic kids, so do go with the full professional assessments. Mothers intuition should never be undervalued - if you don't agree with anything a doctor tells you, get another opinion.
And be ready to fight your school! That's the worst part and you will see thousands of posts on this site of problems with schools and autistic kids!
