Asthma Support Group
Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.

My sons miss a great deal of school each year. Mostly due to allergy related problems. Asthma gone evil.
My 11 yr. old came down with the flu a few weeks ago. The doc told me it would be a long recovery. I inturn told the school this. Yesterday. I got a letter from the school threatening to hold him back in 6th grade if his attendence does not improve. Its Oct. dudes. He is getting stronger, but with a staff infection and meningitis running wild at school I am scared of a secondary infection. So if he seems weak or overtired for no real reason I kept him home an extra two days. I know he would probably have been fine. We also have his homeroom teacher who seems to be experiencing dementia who has marked him absent 2 times when he was in school. Arn't computers great. While we straightened it out over the phone, and Friday I went into school becasue they don't check till last period if he is really there. and they never call to say yep we got him. I went in and demanded to see him. They had the nerve to say why. I said What if hes has been vomiting again and passed out in the bathroom. What if he had an asthma attack in the boys room and is sitting in a corner unable to call for help etc.
Any one ever have a problem with a school like this. I have no idea what todo. We ran into it with my older son too. but not so soon and I always made sure he made up the work .I am a teacher by trade. I can handle middle school.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
As a teacher you should know the one thing that scares the hell out of Board of Ed administrators- a call from a lawyer specializing in students with disabilities, which asthma is. A couple of phone calls from such an attorney should do the trick
An "Individual Education Plan" (IEP) should be established for your son including allowing him to complete work at home and having the attendance disregarded. It should also also include having a special personal aide assigned to your son while he is on school property- which will cost the Board of Ed money.
Ask any parent with a child with a disability for a referal to such a lawyer, or contact any local organization for those with physical or mental disabilities.
Do this as soon as possible. There's nothing like "speaking and carrying a big stick" :-)
