Asthma Support Group
Asthma is a disease of the human respiratory system where the airways narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen, cold air, exercise, or emotional stress. This airway narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, which respond to bronchodilators.

OKAY, MY ASTHMA IS UNDER CONTROL FOR THE MOST PART.I'LL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS. IT'S ALWAYS BETWEEN 3AM-7AM. I WAKE UP COUGHING, I SIT UP (EVEN THOUGH I SLEEP ALMOST UP RIGHT)I'LL CRAWL TO THE BATHROOM AND SOAK A HOT HOT CLOTH AND PUT OVER MY MOUTH AND NOSE.NOW THIS CAN LAST FOR 30MIN. OR 1 1/2 HOURS. WHEN I CAN INHALE OF COURSE I USE MY PUFFERS( IF THERE IN REACH). IF MY HUSBAND IS ON DAYS THEN HE'LL DO THIS FOR ME. I'M EXHAUSTED FOR THE WHOLE DAY SOMETIMES THE NEXT DAY AS WELL. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN EVERY 4 - 6 WEEKS, ALWAYS THE WEATHER IS OR TURNS INTO A BAD DAY. MOST TIMES WITHIN 2 - 6 DAYS I'M COUGHING I'M SO CONGESTED. I GET TO THE DR'S RIGHT AWAY, GET XRAYS AND IT'S PNEUMONIA. I HAD THIS 5 MONTHS LAST YEAR. IT WOULD NOT GO AWAY, OF COURSE I HAD ANTIBIOTICS, COUGH MEDICINES. I'D GET BETTER THEN I'D HAVE AN ATTACK AND I'D BE SICK AGAIN. IT WENT FROM ONE LUNG TO THE OTHER TO BOTH? IT JUST HAPPENED 2 DAYS AGO I CAME HOME FROM THE DR'S, THE OFFICE JUST CALLED AND GUESS WHAT? 3/4 OF MY RIGHT LUNG IS FULL. NOW YOU'D THINK DA? OF COURSE THE ANSWERS SIMPLE BUT I TELL YOU 3 DAYS AGO I WAS FINE, NO COUGH NO CONGESTION, WASN'T TIRED. TODAY I'M EXHAUSTED THE DR'S ARE PUZZLED THE WAY ITS SO LIKE CLOCK WORK. DOES ANYONE HAVE IDEAS, HELP, MEDS. SUGGESTIONS, ANYTHING. WITH THANKS AHEAD PRESH PRESH

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Yeah, I've been going through this since birth. One day you're fine, the next waking up with pneumonia which takes forever to clear. This year wound up in the hospital for five days to clear up pneumonia I had for at least a month - by coincidence also the right lung though my left is generally weaker.
Anyway, while in the hospital I was introduced to an inhaled expectorant medication going by the generic name acetylcystiene. It is inhaled along with a brochodialtor such as duoneb. As it is sulfer-based, it tastes and smells like rotten eggs. But let me tell you, it clears out lungs in a hurry and can both prevent pneumonia in the first place and clear it up quickly once it sets in.
Though you still might need to use inhaled, oral and/or injectible steroids, using acetylcystiene in the nebulizer at the first sign of a cold or worsening breathing can prevent a world of problems.
Also, to prevent problems breathing dry air during night, use a warm steam vaporizer with mentholated vapo steam (preferably Vicks)fluid. This is available at at most department stores (Walmart, Kmart, etc.) and can do a world of good also. Make sure it is warm steam and make sure the vapo steam you buy is compatiable with your unit and used correctly, (usually poured into a medicine cup piece). I find the units with a removable tank, which is easy to fill in a sink or bathtub, are best and last the longest- usually at least a couple of seasons. Don't buy the cheap one-piece units as they rot out quickly.
These are the best tricks of the trade I can give you along with using an inhaled steroid maintainence drug such as the 500mg Advair.
And, yes, this does happen like clockwork in asthmatics and usually during times of bad weather- it is expected.
Please post how you are doing and any actions you decide to take and how it's worked out for you.
Hope you recover quickly from this latest setback and that you can prevent this from happening again so quickly in the future.
with pneumonia after that.Found out that I snored even with the CPAP mask on that was also irritating my sinuses Got a chin strap also I designed a
carbon and HEPA filter attached to the back of the CPAP. The air that I breath
at night is filtered and hunidified. Also I wash my sinuses with saline solution at night. Be careful when the temperature drops to the single numbers washing sinuses can cause nose bleeds. Havn't
gotten pneumonia since. The meds are
a good substrate for bacteria to grow on
I hope that the doctor gave you pneumonia shots. I would recomend a good HEPA filter and a humidifer for the
bedroom. I have them hooked to my CPAP machine.
