Hi, I have a question. I have two children on the spectrum. My oldest son Sean is diagnosed ASD and my little guy presently PDD-NOS/Hyperlexic. How do you know if its hyperlexia or aspergers. Brett is social, has good eye contact, his speech is pretty ok, he is able to read started at 2 years old, he is now three. When I mean read I mean read like things that he shouldn't be able to and he can spell things out. If I wanted him to not understand something and I spelled it to my husband he would know what I spelled. When I say he is social what I mean is, is that he has the want to be social he just doesn't really know how to do it. Is there a spectrum among aspergers? Like there is with other autistic spectrum disorders like ASD/LF - ASD-HF you know what I mean? Not sure how to describe it. I am not sure where my little guy Brett sits. He does not script or stim like my older son. Anyway just looking for answers and help. Thank you. Denise

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I would be treating the symptoms and not looking for causes, also dont take too much notice of diagnoses as often other experts would diagnose differently
My doctor explained it to me like a ven diagram. He may take in a little of autism, add, aspergers. Not all kids fit a set catagory or diagnosis. You need to treat the symptoms. My son is diagnosed Aspergers with ADD. He has a lot of the social deficits related to Aspergers and has some of ADD. I wanted a concrete answer but Doctors don't have concrete answers, they just treat the symptoms.
If you think of the left brain as processing verbally and logically, then folks with AS are highly left-brained but are poor in the right-brain skills of social, physical, gestalting...
If you think of the right brain as patterns, art, social, physical, gestalting, then folks with High Functioning Autism (including Hyperlexia) are strong in their right-brain functioning, just the opposite.
I think this is a good diagnostic distinction to make, and accurately describes the symptoms people describe for the two.
