Arnold-Chiari Malformation Support Group
Arnold-Chiari malformation, sometimes referred to as 'Chiari malformation' or ACM, is a congenital anomaly of the brain. Arnold-Chiari Malformation II occurs in almost all children born with both spina bifida and hydrocephalus, but ACM I is typically seen in children and adults without spina bifida.

Most all the symptoms I had before surgery remain or came back. Is this the norm. I was 45 years old before they found I had ACM.

That is a bummer. Sometimes, if you have had it for a really long time, the damage is permanent. I hope and pray that my doctors know what they are doing as I have Chiari, a very small chiari, but they don't think it needs surgery. I have other issues though. Anyway, good luck with that.

How long has it been since you had surgery?

It is my understanding that the surgery is to stop the progression of symptoms but not necessarily to reverse any you had. Some of my symptoms went away right away only to get them back. I found out that I have increased intracranial pressure AKA Pseudo tumor cerebri. I get lumbar punctures to relieve the pressure. For the forst week after all of the symptoms go away and then slowly come back. I am a lot better than before the surgery but when everything acts up it's almost like I never had it. coughing still causes pain. changes in the weather cause problems (per the NS my head is like a barometer).

My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
