Personally I used to take xanax .5 3x a day. He switched me to klonopin .5 3x a day. I take the klonopin about every 10-12 hours so I am actually taking only 2 pills a day and it is working for me. Sometimes I have to take the 3rd dose if I get really anxious after about 6-8 hours.
You can always start slow and work your way up. It will make you tired at first even being on xanax 3x a day for 12 years when I switched over all I wanted to do was sleep. This stopped after about 4-5 days.
I would not INCREASE your dosage without your doc knowing though. Since it is highly addictive this tends to be an issue and they look really bad on doing that. If you were prescribed it and never taken it before you can always try a lower dose to start and work your way up. Klonopin stays in your system for 10-12 hours so you could always start with a lower dose to see how you tolerate it. I always do that with new meds I take to see the side effects before I jump right in.
