Mine's not that severe, but some nights it takes me hours of laying in bed to sleep. Thoughts going in circles, all that stuff.
One thing that helps me, and has been said in a TV special and sleep help book, is to NOT LIE THERE FOR HOURS. If you haven't had any luck after about half an hour, get up and walk around for a few minutes. Get a small drink of water or something.
Make sure you're not hungry or have to use the bathroom before you lie down. Turn your alarm clock, or any other illumated item, away from you. Looking at the clock makes things worse. Just tell yourself that whatever sleep you get is good, and not to panic that because you aren't asleep yet, you'll get no sleep and be tired tomorrow and blah blah blah.
Hope this helps!!
