sometimes i try to turn a fan on for white noise, warm milk (cliche, i know but it works for me) and i listen to an all clasical radio station.
i have the best luck with the following - i also concentrate on my breathing...I breathe really slow and count backwards from 100. i rarely get passed 75.

let's see herbal remedies? Well, I love to take Chamomile tea to sleep, or I take this tea called" sweet dreams" by bigelow. I bought it at the Winco supermarket in the local area. What else, when I cant sleep I pray the rosary, because the repition puts me to sleep...but if you aren't catholic, maybe some good ol' fashioned warm milk after a relaxing bath or shower will help you. I like to also put lotion or cream on my arms andlegs...I use this lavender lotion for babies, and I love it..it's so relaxing..it's called, "Calming Baby Lotion - Lavender & Chamomile" by Baby Magic. I bought it at WalMart. I love it because it really does relax me. good luck!
