Ok, I first started therapy 10 years ago when I was living in the Boston area. I had the most wonderful therapist. She helped me great deal. Since I moved to New York, I found a wonderful psychiatrist but he is not in network with my insurance so could never afford therapy with him- only do brief med management when I need refills.
Anyhow, I have tried about 4 therapists who are in network. They are all female Social workers. One was halfway decent but she is not in my network. I picked another one recently. I feel like she is not helping. I tried to give her feeback the other day that she never mentions my strenghts. She said, "We are not here to talk about your strenghts". Ok, she obviously does not need to praise me all the time but I thoguth that was an awful statement. I try to tell her reactions I have to certain people. She acted like I was out of my mind when I was trying to explain why I felt uncomfortable with someone. Whether or not she thinks I am psychotic, she shouldn't make me feel that way. she basically disagreed with what I said I needed. She said therapy is hard work. But should I be feeling terrible every time I come from a session? any thoughts?

I have been here before, a long long time ago and now I am back.Forgive me for not just saying what I want to say, even under a triple dose of antidepressants it is still raw and seeping and I am hesitant at revealing it as at least under the bandages around my heart I don,t have to look at how raw and wounded. My child was cleaved from my heart by his own actions. my child of ten, turning eleven...

theatre and I are there already. I'm having a very berry tea with crackers, cheese and cherry tomatoes and she's having a joint with some beer and we're both on really comfy recliners on thick pile carpet. we need some help with the decor if anyone is around??
You said you liked the doctor you saw. Have you considered looking for a male therapist?
I wish you well!
She is there to help and encourage you.
I had an experience like that about 6 months ago for 6 months, she withheld my meds when i was rock bottom and made me feel like scum.
I ended up with no meds in the ER with bP of 200/140.
Thankgoodness i have a great doctor and coucillor now.
If you get a bad vibe on first visit, dont go back.
Keep looking, you deserve better!
Good Luck
The one thing I found was to try to find a psycologist instead of a social worker. Since they have a degree in mental health they just can't prescribe drugs they seem to have more of a grasp on mental issues.
Also, I agree with her when she says you aren't there to talk about your strengths. You are there to talk about your issues. You already know your strengths, so focus on the real issues that are keeping you from living a more fulfilled life.
