General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. My anxiety has gotten much worse recently and my doctor gave me Effexor. When I started taking it I felt extremely sick. I was nautious, all of my muscles felt weak and restless. I could barely get out of bed. My mind would race and I thought I was going crazy. I only took it for 3 days and then stopped and it took another week for me to feel somewhat normal. Has anyone else had an experience like this? What medications work? I tried Lexipro and had a similar experience. If I can't take these types of meds what am I to do? I have to get this anxiety under control, I haven't left my house in over a month.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Good luck, but listen to your body and call your doctor to let he or she know. You deserve to feel MUCH better!
If you deal with constant anxiety you may need to take these daily on a regular basis. I took Xanax 3x a day for 12 years and am now on Klonopin. I have never taken Ativan or Vallium.
Pros and Cons of the 2 I took in my opinion.
Xanax - Works in about 15-20 minutes and really takes the edge off.
Only lasts about 4-6 hours per dose which is the bad part.
Klonopin - Takes about 45 minutes to an hour to work and takes the edge off.
Lasts for around 10-12 hours per dose so sometimes only prescribed 2x a day.
After taking a benzo daily for so long I prefer Klonopin over Xanax because each dose lasts twice as long. If you take it 3 times a day your actually having more in your system at a time because of a much longer half life of the medication.
Bad part of benzos is that your body can become tolerant to them and you need more or to switch to a different one. Good thing about Benzos is that they all seem to do the exact same thing and work in nearly the exact same way where antidepressants can work in a much different way then another.
Talk to your doctor about meds, some people just cannot antidepressants. I took them for 10 years and they made me worse then I was in my opinion.
Most doctors don't like to just use benzos, I have a very good doctor that realizes that some people can't tolerate antidepressants.
If you struggle from anxiety more then depression it is a good option in my opinion.
After I switched to Ciprelex (still taking it 2 years later), it took some time for my anxiety to go back down to my pre-Effexor levels and all I did was sleep for a month.
Go back to your doctor and as to try something else.
