Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Wish I had something more specific to tell you, but good luck. :)
It is an amazing sndrome or whatever it is. I can look at an issue and be all logical about it, "I know that I am no more safe sitting home alone than I am in my car, or in a restaurant, or at the park", but as soon as I contemplate going out I start to feel anxious.
Sometimes I have to just get out and prove I can otherwise it gets worse.
I realized that I've never passed out from a panic attack, and that, if my foot did slip off the brake at a stoplight I'd bump into the car in front of me and feel embarrassed but at least wouldn't hurt anyone or be physically hurt myself.
Why do you fear driving more when alone? Are you better able to cope with driving if you have the distraction of someone being there with you to talk to? Do you feel the person would be of help if you got dizzy and light headed while driving? How long has it been going on?
If you drive less, it can get worse. Distractions can help. For now, if someone can't be with you while driving, maybe a hands free cell phone call would help.
I don't know your specific situation, and what has worked for me may not work for you, but I've been there. A couple of weeks ago I helped a friend move over 1500 miles by driving their rental truck for them, so I guess driving isn't a trigger for me anymore.
Hang in there, and good luck. :)
It could be a book on tape or a self-help tape. Just listen to someone else talking besides me, inside my head!
I bought a decent one at Border's recently and I see it for sale on Target's web site for less than $10: Overcome Fear and Anxiety, While you drive"

These are fast. I conk out while lisening but am also able to wake up fast without feeling groggy. I am trying to do 1-2 per day since I have had a setback...along with Xanax, counseling, and an hour walk everyday the weather agrees.
I always LOVED to drive and especially through mountains, over bridges, in cities, etc.
One week I drove to Florida and it was business as usual going over the Smokies in Tennessee from IL to FL. A week later, no problems and when I hit Mont Eagle pass... it hit me big time. No real trigger or at least not significant one. Just all of a sudden terrified of doing something I always loved to do.
The biggest deal of all is that you have lost your freedom in life. You don't partake in activities you enjoy, you often stay only within a comfort zone... i.e. you are not living on your terms.
I am looking into treatment options and if I find one that works... it looks promising... I will be sure to share.
Recently, it seems to have evolved into a total fear of riding in cars, even when i'm with my husband. Every time we come to a stop light i tense up, and get a knot in the pit of my stomache, and my heart races.
all i can do is some deep breaths and try and relax in my seat a little. I usually have some sweets in my car aswell that seems to help" ones that you cant swollow" or that worries me aswell.
