Avoidance is one of the hardest things that I am learning to beat. My CBT therapist is helping, but it's so easy to avoid situations that have caused me to be so uncomfortable in the past.
It's our bodies natural response not to want to go into a situation that has caused stress before...it's a natural survival strategy, although it's incorrect as all the places I have had anxiety attacks, there hasn't been any REAL danger...just danger that I percieve sub-conciously for whatever reason.
I have to go back to work next week after being off sick for 3 months and it's scaring me real bad. Last time I was there I had a horrendous anxiety attack and haven't been back since.
I think avoidance only adds to the anxiety as most things that we avoid are things that we have to do...like travel, work etc...
It's hard, but my CBT therapist is teaching me to rationalise everything and not should internalise the negative thoughts.
