Amputees Support Group
Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. Many have undergone amputation or have been living with a missing limb since birth. In either case, life as an amputee can be challenging. This is the place to find others going through the same experiences as an amputee. Share your thoughts, troubles, and solutions with the community.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is in the news again. Did anyone watch the CBS evening news last night, Oct 16th? I did, but usually I do not because you can't really get the news any more, just propaganda. They(the CDC) are now saying that MRSA is a National Health epidemic. It takes them a while, doesn't it? It has only been around since 1961 and has been getting worse ever since. About 18,000 people a year die from it and most amputations for diabetics are caused by it. Now they are saying that Medicare will no longer pay for preventable infections caused in hospitals, thus trying to make them clean up their act since at least 50% of the infections are contracted there. The problem is that if you are on Medicare you will no longer be able to get the help you need because they will not pay for the treatment. Why is it, that it is the patient that always has to suffer the consequence of the medical industries incompetence?
We as amputees must be extremely careful since we are prone to this type of infection. Keep your residual limbs and silicon liners as clean as possible and try your best to avoid exposure whenever possible as well. I do not wish to lose more of my limb to this enemy of our health.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I also contracted MRSA while having bypass surgery to save my leg in a major medical facility in Edmonton. Since it is very hard to rid your body of this virus the outcome was eventually losing the leg. In Canada the cost for the medication is $150 dollars a day. You must be on the medication for at least 2 weeks. I was lucky enough to remain in the hospital during the time I needed to take the medication and the cost was covered by the hospital.
This virus is very contagious through touch. Eg) touching the affected area (wound) and touching another open sore on the body. All individuals affected with MRSA must be in a hospital room of their own, anyone coming into the room must wear gowns, latex gloves, and mouth and nose masks.
Everyone please be careful.
MRSA is how I lost my leg. It went deep to the bone and became Osteomellitus. Once this happened it was virtually hopeless, my only hope to survive and stop its spread was amputation. I know many of you had to make the same decision, based on the only option available, amputation or death.
Many folks have confused my passion for my products, with a desire for money, and I know most of you understand where I am coming from. MRSA begins on the skin as I found out after many, many hours of research. That is how it gained a foot hold in my life. First half of a big toe, then the other half. Next the big toe on the other foot, and the tips of two others. Two years of constant infection and re-infection and then the ankle itself and my amputation. This is what led me to try to find a way to stop the spread of this viscous bacteria and with the Lord's help I did. Not a product push in anyway, just an explanation as to why I do what I do.
