Amputees Support Group
Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. Many have undergone amputation or have been living with a missing limb since birth. In either case, life as an amputee can be challenging. This is the place to find others going through the same experiences as an amputee. Hi, I just found this site and am praying one of you can help. My husband was in a terrible motorcycle accident last August. He was hit by a garbage truck on his left side. His knee was rotated 180 degrees on impact and after multiple surgeries, he ended up with a BKA. His knee is causes him extreme pain now and he has not real movement in it. He is considering a knee replacement, but the doctors aren't sure if it will really work. My question is........ with his valgus (I think thats what it is called) which causes his stump to swing out, will a knee replacement truly work? His only other option is to amputate above the knee. After everything he as been through I am terrified of ANY more surgeries!! I can not find any site that addresses BKA and knee replacements. Thanks for any and all help!!

From what I've been told by doctors is that a knee replacement is NOT a very good option for younger people. They aren't real strong and just don't last very long 5-8 years. They are used mostly on elderly patients since they are much less active and are less likly to break them. From what you have posted here I would opt for the above knee amputation and get a top of the line prosthetic knee like the C-leg from otto bock or the Rheo from ossur and get on with life. Anything else you do like the knee replacement will only keep you husband less mobile and most likly in pain. Bottom line -- It sounds like he will have to have his knee amputated at some point in his life, a replacement or other surgery will likely just delay the inevitable out come of amputation.

I don't know anything about above the knee amputation, since I am a bka too, BUT, I he is in so much pain and cant use the knee, why keep it! I think the odd are more in your favoe to re-amputate above the knee before some infection starts up or complications set in to the knee, and they have to remove even MORE!!! You best chances are to be proactive, and I think the outcome will be more secure and less painful. About the stress of another surgery... How about the stress and mental anguish he is going through trying to deal with a impossible situation. He wants to walk, but cant normally without this rotation you are speaking of and how it affects his attitude for the future??? Just a thought, Love to you.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
