Alopecia Areata Support Group
Alopecia areata ("baldness in spots") is a form of hair loss from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the head especially in the first stages, it is also called spot baldness. Hair loss can extend to eyebrows, eyelashes and facial and nasal hair and create more bald spots elsewhere in the body.

I am a 22 year old male suffering with Alopecia Areata. I have a bald spot on the back of my head about the size of a golf ball and 2 more tiny spots near by. I am hoping it doesn't keep spreading because I am getting more and more depressed as it gets bigger. I've got the steroid shots on the spot from my doctor and my hairdresser tells me it is growing in.
This is extremely emotional and stressful for me because of my lifestyle. Being 22, I am constantly going on dates with my girlfriend, going to the bar, hanging out with friends, school, gym and so on. I am out more than I am at home and I constantly get asked about what happened to my head.
If anyone has stories, please share them.

Mine started out with one spot........then another....and another........old ones would grow back in ,but could not keep up with the new ones..... I got tired of dealing it.When i shaved my head I actually got more attention from the ladies......go figure....i had silver dollar size patches...now there about the size of a nickle as the patches are filling in quicker than new ones.....

Did you shave it completely bald with a razor or did you just use like a hair buzzer with a short setting?

tried the buzzer first but the patches were still too noticable so i decided to shave it

Hey! I'm 26 and it started about a year ago, nearly all of it as gone from the sides and I'm at my wits end.... hardly go out anymore unless really necessary and then I wear a cap. It really has ruined my life! Don't want to shave it as it's still on top and also I saw a pic of a guy with the same thing and even when shaved the head was grey where hair grows under the skin and white where it doesn't so I'd still feel weird?! Always read about women with this but rarely any men. I guess it's distressing for anyone but for young people it's even worse with bars/wanting to look good and confidence etc. Sick of it but hopefully you will have some regrowth!

I got it back in 2003, it ruined my life. I dropped out school and took a job where I could where a hat. Then I got fired and now I turned into an alcoholic and in addition I can't get a woman. And sadly I have no advice. But I wish you the best.

A shaved head will look horrible on me... i've had long hair all my life. I turn 21 next week... this blows more than anything I've yet to experience...

Quit moaning, its only making it worse. Im a 17 year old boy, everyday i wake up at 5:55 and have to make it to school by 7:40. Its pretty rough but i use this stuff called Couvre, Hair Cubed, and Couvre Thickening Gel. All of these things work great but run at an expensive price. I also try to put a little Hairspray in to keep all my hair still once its in place. Yes, i still get questions from people asking why i have a helmet on my head because of my long, surfer-like hair, but its worth it because no one in school knows im balding. i have about 6 large spots on my head and about half of my hair is gone. It has now spread to my eyebrows so i use eyebrow pencils but keep everything still natural looking. I also ordered some nice New Era hats to wear around with friends. Let me get to my point, ive been suffering from Alopecia Areata since i was in 1st grade and its been an on and off thing. Ive contemplated suicide once because it is such a depressing disease to have because im always avoiding all of my friends who i used to feel comfortable with Freshman year of High School . I go to therapy and talk to a lady who really helps me out with everything. Also, every month i go to a Doctor who injects over 100 steroid shots in my head. It is very painful, but worth it. My hair is growing back, but not as much as i would like it to be. The rate at which its falling out is much greater. I sit in the back of every class and have just recently gotten a chronic illness note because ive lost credit in my classes for being tardy all of the time :( It upsets me a lot and gets the best of me all the time, but ive learned to be strong. Dont let it get the best of you and if you want to talk then friend me, i just learned about this site not too long ago and its great. If you want the links to the Hair Care products i use, let me know.

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
