back in the days of "chivalry" when to warring parties came to battle they would send emmisaries into the field. The offer would be made to the weaker of the 2 armies "surrender or die". If they chose to fight they were killed to a man. If they chose to surrender thay were allowed to keep all they had and were assimilated into the "winning" armymaking the it stronger and more apt to be victorious in other battles.
