My husband's sister was adopted from El Salvador almost 30 years ago. His parents never talked to her about being adopted. He recently asked his mother if she talked to his sister about being adopted and her response was that she could figure it out for herself being that she does not look white. I told my husband that his sister is hispanic and he get angry every time and we argue because they don't want to believe that she is hispanic. He think that she is Indian because of her eyes and she get really brown during the Summer. I keep telling him she is not Indian, she is Hispanic and it's almost like he think being Indian is better than being Hispanic. Her birth mother named her Maria and that is the name that my in-laws kept.
