My son is 13 and has ADHD. We live in Hampshire,England and the only help offered is the Child Guildance Clinic. He was on Strattera for a year but the side effects caused a suppressed appetite so he came off them. Things have got worse since, he's been suspended twice from school for disruptive behaviour. He doesn't acknowledge any responsibility for his behaviour and blames everyone else. He is very sensitive and gets upset easily. As a single parent I have no support from my own parents. They adore my son and tend to spoil him, my authority is constantly overridden with regards to my son who knows this and doesn't listen or respect me at all. He knows after a telling off from me he can call nan and grandad get reassurance, more pocket money and trips out.
My parents think involving the doctors/child guidance is wrong and he doesnt have ADHD but a food allergy. All doctors disagree but she wont accept it. All I want is to help my son but my parents interfere and the guidlines i set for my son never work.
I dont like the idea of pills anyway and wonder if behaviour therapy would work. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
My son is 12, and has the same diagnosis (ADHD) as well as ODD. We experience his disrespect at times, but it is so much better than it used to be. I know when his "disrespect" is intentional, just as I recognize when it is not intentional. The lack of social skills/development contributes to the choice of poor words; at least in my opinion. I found it extremely beneficial to research ODD and get a better knowledge of how it often intertwines with ADHD. I have worked diligently on my own "reactive behavior" and notice the great impact it has on my son. I hold him accountable for his action on a consistent behavior, just as I praise him for his good behavior. I try in create a positive environment for us and fill our space with positive comments as a proactive measure to keep the negative actions away. My son has transitioned from a "trouble student" in 5th grade, to a good student in 6th grade (only 3 phone calls from teachers all school year), to a great student this year; 7th grade. I have not received any negative phone calls from school, and my school remains on the honor role. It is wonderful to get a report card with good behavior as well as all A's and B's!
Work on yourself first. Get a life coach, an Add coach, counseling, whatever it takes. When you have a concrete "plan" on how to help your son, you will be headed in the right direction!
My next step with my son is private social skills training with a specialist. T
