Hello, I just joined.
I am a father of a teenage daughter who was just diagnosed with ADHD.
After learning on line what ADHD is I can now see that she probably had it for a long time? But my question is, to which I cannot find any answer, why it has escalated particularly during last year, even last weeks? She appears to be very depressed, she was prescribed medication but she forgets to take it, is there anything I can do to cheer her up?
Thank you,
Henry Resheto

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Things have tended to escalate from time to time!
And I can say from my own experience only that when the meds are forgotten that an increase in problems is found from withdrawl. Also, forgetting the meds or anything for that matter is a common occurance with my boys! I have to check to see if they remembered or not...otherwise things are a little off!
If you have questions....this is a great place to get answers...the people here are GREAT!! Take care, and good luck on your journey! :o)
Since I haven't spoken to my daughter's doctor all I know about ADHD is what she tells me and what I can find on the Internet. My first and foremost concern is her inability to get a good night sleep. According to my daughter she has problems falling asleep, staying asleep during the night, but then she has problems waking up. The medication she was prescribed she is to take in the morning and it is to keep her energized during the day. Is there any other possible medication to help her sleep during night?
My second concern, is that she does not go anywhere anymore. She stopped seeing her friends from high school, from work and etc. She is not making new friends in the University. She sits home all the time. She only chats with her friends online or on the cell phone via SMS. Is that part of disease, normal teenage blurries, or both? Will medication help? Funny, usually parents complain about kids partying too much - I have quite an opposite problem.
Reply #2 suggests that symptoms of ADHD must be present before the age of 7 for the official diagnosis to be made. Actually, I do not think she showed any kind of special symptoms that early. Problems become noticeable much later when she started a high school, and really escalated when she started the University. Is that a chance she is being misdiagnosed?
Her high school problems coincided with her taking a higher intensity program, program that allowed her to earn some university credits while in high school. It took her many sleepless nights to get through all these assignments... And I am wondering is that possible her current condition was induced, or at least aggravated, by all this hard work in the high school? Or ADHD has purely (100%) anatomical causes?
Thank you,
Henry
