Did the test they gave him test just for dyslexia or did it also test for other learning disabilities? This sounds kind of like my son. He was a pretty good student up until 3rd grade. My husband and I had no idea that he was struggling in school, his grades looked fine. We showed up to parent teacher conferences and they dropped a bomb on us. They told us he had a learning disability in Reading and was no where near the level he should be. Then the first part of 4th grade they added LD in Writing. Things went downhill from there. The school tested him for ADHD at that time and said he didn't have it. I had him tested by a psychologist when he was in 5th grade, he said he didn't have it. Then we started seeing a new psychologist when he started 6th grade for behavior modification, it was getting really bad at our home and in school. This helped us at home, but school go worse and worse. Finally, after about 10 months of therapy, I called the doctor and asked him to please test my son for ADHD again, or any other disorder because something was not right. He did and right after the sheets were filled out and my son took a test on-line at the doctor's office the psychologist came in and said he was really glad that he did this because my son does have ADHD/ODD, not so much hyperactivity, but very limited impulse control. We did start him on medicine and I think after 2 months we finally found one that helps, he's doing okay.

My point is, if you know something is 'not right', you should definitely get a second opinion, in my case I had to get a 3rd.

Im not actually sure if the test was for other things as well i will contact his school and find out. The school doesn't seem too worried but im concerned if i just carry on he will leave without the basic reading and writing skills he will need in life . I am definitely going to take him to the doctors and go from there fingers crossed i will get some much needed answers. So great full for the advice many thanks.

One of the things I learned through testing is that you should notice a pattern of behavior beginning around age 4-5. And not to knock school counselors, because they have such a varied list of things to deal with, but I wouldn't depend on them for answers to ADHD. One of the best things I did was check out some books from the library that describe the symptoms. After that, I found a counselor. Not only myself, but my daughter's teacher, filled out questionnaires. And then the counselor met with my daughter, and he made the determination from there. It was a frustrating process that took several months, but such a relief to have some answers to her behavior.

"A diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; DSM-IV) implies the presence of hyperactiveimpulsive or inattentive symptoms that caused impairment and were present before age 7 years. The symptoms must cause clinically significant impairment, e.g., in social, academic, or occupational functioning, and be present in two or more settings, e.g., school (or work) and at home. The symptoms must not be better accounted for by another mental disorder. For the Inattentive Type, at least six of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: lack of attention to details/careless mistakes; lack of sustained attention; poor listener; failure to follow through on tasks; poor organization; avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort; loses things; easily distracted; forgetful. For the Hyperactive-Impulsive Type, at least six of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: fidgeting/squirming; leaving seat; inappropriate running/climbing; difficulty with quiet activities; "on the go"; excessive talking; blurting answers; can't wait turn; intrusive. The Combined Type requires both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive criteria to be met."
