My 6 year-old son was recently (three days ago)diagnosed with ADD (diagnosis based on time-on-task report and teacher comments). My doctor and I have decided not to mediate him at this time.
I'm so annoyed with his school, it isn't funny. We moved over the summer and he's in a different school district. He was in all-day kindergarten (where some of these behaviors were identified, but Dr. felt it was his first time in classroom environment and to wait before jumping to the conclusion). His current school has half-day kindergarten. Yet, it's constantly brought up that he didn't go to this school last year. (ARGH!)
The new school is in a higher economic bracket. Just to say that I feel that they are snooty and they really seem to be annoyed at having to deal with something that's outside the norm. I feel, as does my doctor, that they would be happier if my son was medicated rather than making modifications to his environment.
My doctor and I requested a behavior rating chart to be done. There has been a preliminary meeting with a "team" at school concerning my son. I learned about this meeting after it occurred and was not invited to it, although I did learn that some initial steps are being done (software program installed on in-classroom MAC, speeding up the process of speech evalution, OT evaluation, involvement in a social skills program). Once the behavior rating chart is done, I'm going to insist on a 504 Plan to address areas of concern. I fear that by insisting on it ahead of this, the rating chart might identify things I'm not aware of now.
Here's what I'm most angry about: Just 3 days ago (Thursday), I let his teacher know about the diagnosis. On Friday, I get a note home from his Art teacher that he's not following directions and is having a hard time knowing what to do. Coincidential? Even so, now that the school KNOWS he has ADD, receiving directions is inherently challenging for a child with ADD or ADHD - I've learned that much in just a few days. Shouldn't a teacher of any subject know this??? Shouldn't his homeroom teacher have had a discussion with this Art teacher??? And, do I handle this note diplomatically or defensively? I can't decide which approach is best. I can say that I wanted to rip the Art teacher's head off when I got the note and I found the timing to be just too much of a coincidence. He's never gotten a note like this before.
Oh - and his teacher told me that I would be getting a phone call from the school psychologist, which has not happened. Funny how they can have a team meeting about my son, but not time to call me. Additionally, should they be having any meeting about him without telling me about it???
Thanks for listening.

you need to get an official dx. from the docter. then in writing request a meeting for an 504 plan to be put in place for your son, make a copy ofthe letter and date it, they have so many days to do this, do not let them tell you he does not qualify for one, also find a counsleor that can help you come up with a list ofthings that will help your child in school, to take to the meeting. you need to be pleasant but do not be a pushover, and there are some teachers that do try to help these kids but a lot of teachers are not traines in helping these kids,, so as a parent and as histeachers you all need to have a meeting to work out something to help them and him, stay on top of them, write down phone calls you make to them and continoe to send letters and if you get no response then go above their heads and find an advocate, you will have to work at getting your son the help he needs and not letting them use excuses to put it off, they may tell yoo it is to late in the year,, tell them to bad, if they want to test him themselves tell them they do need to test him because based on the dx. the docter gave him they can write a 504 plan with that.but if they feel they need to test him they can still do that then change things in the plan if need be, we have a group on here called the iep resource and advice .join that and they can help you find someone in your area to help you,, good luck and hang in there and do not give up. do not let deflate your plans to help your son,,

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
