Can you be a dry drunk and working the 12 step pro

May seem like a weird question yet I have never heard this before........
At my last meeting, someone shared she was 12 years without a drink, working the 12 step program, yet she likened herself to a dry drunk as she drunk energy drinks every day.....the addictive behaviour.
I have never thought about this as to me, if you are working a good 12 step program and are active in your program, you are sober.
I guess it is the addictive personality that puts this into question???
People smoke every day and are sober so......where does the difference come in??
Would welcome people's views.

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Thanks for the reply.
As an aside i dont buy into the whole addictive personality thing but thats probably a whole other discussion :)
I will listen to her next shares.
I believe it is possible to do all the 12 steps, get the 10th step promises, claim to be recovered and then fail to stay spiritually fit by using of the Growth & Maintenance steps 10 - 12. In that situation it is just a matter of time before one returns to being a dry-drunk.
What is the daily program that keeps me spiritually fit?
"Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. Love and tolerance of others is our code".
Another half-truth:
"There are no wrong ways to stay sober"
However, there are many unreliable ways to stay sober.
To me, a dry drunk is someone who is spiritually unwell yet not so unwell as to have actually relapsed. A bit like teetering on the edge of a cliff - unhappy with his/her lot and without the serenity essential to living a happy spiritual life.
But to throw in a wildcard, most of us are sometimes not aware, even with years up sober and having done the steps that we are exhibiting certain behaviour, or that we are not actually doing what we claim to do. It may well be that she IS a dry drunk, isn't actually doing the steps to the best of her ability, although she claims to and may actually think she is, and she is attaching the painful emotions that brings to her non-alcoholic beverage. We all lie to ourselves and others at times, in varying degrees - I certainly do. And who knows, she may need psych help on top of AA. I know we need to take people as they present themselves, but the longer I am in AA, the more I get ASTOUNDED at the bullshit people spin - which comes clear either through other members, or the person in question ultimately fessing up from the floor about past or present stuff. Astounded. Just sayin'.
Did she share what action she intends to take to correct this situation? Did she say that she had decided to take her inventory to reveal what is really going on with her? Probably not - shame, what a good role model she could have been for newcomers!
You could always ask her! LOL
