Following on from donttreads reply in another post, I just thought I'd ask this question so we could discuss it. In my humble opinion the steps are mandatory to joining AA, otherwise there seems little point in attending meetings or going to AA. You could just as well sit with any other group of people who are not drinking and call it a group of AA! Surely the whole point of AA is to do the steps and have a spiritual experience which gets people recovered from the mental craving that real alcoholics have?
