from the ages of about 2 till 5 I used sign language to communicate with my son.

I used to use sign language so people would not know what cues I was giving my son, only he would know so he would not become embarrassed.
He chews his clothes and he fiddles with himself when ever he drifts off into his own world
Therapists often use SL to get his attention and it does work
