I started using sign after I fired my therapists who no longer followed through on my son's plan of care. This was how I initiated speech along with PECs and verbal cues.

Yes, used when he was for the most-part non-verbal. continued to use when in public places.( to correct him or to let him know we would be leaving some. It is also great for him to let me know what he wants in public when he is stressed.
