A thymectomy is an operation to remove the thymus gland. It usually results in remission of myasthenia gravis with the help of medication including steroids. However, this remission may not be permanent. more at Wikipedia

Thymectomy Reviews

Had surgery when I was 14. They removed 2/3 of my Thymus along with the tumor. At the time I did not show any signs of MG symptoms. It was not until Nov of 2011 that I actually showed MG symptoms when I went into a MG crisis. I believe I went into MG crisis before this but doctors in ER always thought it was pneumonia and treated me for pneumonia. It wasn't until I actually went through 4 months of no voice and breathing problems and later being referred to a Neuro that I was diagnosed with MG

tolerated the procedure well, done with a scope from an incision(about 3 inches) on my neck, but post op hospital management was bit scary and eye opening.

Had my thymus removed - it was stage two cancer. They had to do radiation treatments for almost three months. Symptoms improved for about a year and I was sure I was in remission. But now my symptoms are back almost to where they were when I was first diagnosed. Side effects of radiation - radiation pneuminitis! Yuck!

I was fortunate that the surgeons felt they could operate without cutting through my chest bone. I have just 5 little scares on the right side of my thorax. Thank you to the skilled individuals who successfully performed a radical bilateral thoracoscopic thymectomy. I feel the thymectomy helped but I wish it was a cure. The only side effects I experienced was some minimal nerve damage and scare tissue that still lurk around.

I went into reamission for a very long time.
