Parents need to put their emotions aside and really listen to their teen. Try to understand his/her pain and show compassion. Things look really black to someone suffering depression and it is very difficult to deal with, but it does get better with treatment and a supportive environment.

Easier said than done...
Very hard to be patient when dealing with addiction sometimes but it is necessary.
Letting him have his voice. Listening to him first instead of demanding he always listen to me. Hearing him out no matter how ridiculous his 5-year-old perspective. He is then much more receptive when I tell him it's my turn to talk.

I've been so patient but they got inpatient with me and didn't listen
My sister is an addict who has lost her license--she is going through a divorce and moving close to home. I know that there are lot's of ways to deal with those having SA issues...Have gone to psychotherapy myself
