He can be a little over-sensitive, so we definitely have to listen to him and see if there are any issues weighing on his mind.

I always try to listen to my boy's fears and doubts.
When he is speaking I give him my full attention. Some people are offended by this, but I think he should be treated as old as he acts.
Works because the kids feel that they are being validated.
The stop, look and watch me works the best. If the child continues not to look at you say it again. This works wonders.
