I was started on Heparin after confirmation of PE and was on that until Coumadin became therapuetic. My hemaglobin dropped to 8.0 and had to recieve a transfusion of blood while hospitalized and before I was allowed to travel home by air. Your Hemaglobin must be 10.0 before you can fly. No GI workup done yet but had neg colonoscopy about a year ago.

My INR has consistently been between 1.8-3.0 for the entire 6 months. Are there side effects?

I was given Heparin in IV for first 4 days in hospital following diagnosis of PE

I had heparin only in the hospital. It took a long time for them to regulate my blood. I was also on warfarin during this time. When the warfarin was stabilize, the heparin was stopped.

heparin was great with the dvt i was on it for 9 months but with the pe i was on it in the hospital with coumadin but now just coumadin.
Used only in the hospital before implant of the filter. Used as substitute for coumadin.

Was on heparin drip in hospital.

I am alive...evidently it worked, and luckily I did not get a tainted dose!
Working / Worked
Heparin was the first thing they put me on intravenously until the coumadin reached a level that was satisfactory. Only on it for 5 days, and I don't remember any side effects.
