An ear tube (tympanostomy tube) is a small tube inserted into the eardrum in order to keep the middle ear aerated for a prolonged period of time. The operation to insert the tube involves a myringotomy. more at Wikipedia

When I was little, they didn't use tubes. They just put holes in the ear drum.

I have an ear tube in my right ear to drain off the excess fluid in my inner ear due to the Meniere's Disease. The ear tube has helped because I have been in remission from the Meniere's Disease for more than 10 years.
