In 1963, they had body casts. I was wrapped in plaster from the top of my head down to the middle of my butt. It was changed every two months. I don't know if the braces of today have a different effect, but I was recently told that body casts were not effective.

My brace worked very well for me. When I was fist diagnosed my doctor was sure I would need surgery but wanted to try the brace. Needless to say the brace worked wonders and I did not have to have surgery.

I had a brace when i was 11 until 14. It worked as far as it slowed down the progression of the curve until i stopped growing.

My doctors did not have me stretch and exercise during the 6 years which would have really helped. There wasn't a lot of knowledge about scoliosis back then. I now deal with arthritis secondary to scoliosis.
