I love making music, sing bass, cantor for my parish. Gave away my guitar; my wrists don't hurt too bad, but I've lost dexterity and sensitivity in my fingers. I'm applying for disability on the advice of my rheumatologist. I'm a grandfather, married, 2 children, 5 grandkids.

Close Hypothyroidism
Family history of hypothyroidism. The sonogram of my goiter showed 6 nodules. I'm not going back to driving professionally, due to carpal tunnel, both wrists, cubital tunnel syndrome at the elbows. It's possible my thyroid problems started over 20 years ago with Grave's Disease. Up to 112 mcg synthroid every morning.
Treatments
- Celebrex Somewhat Helpful
- Reduced inflammation. Was taking 200 mg twice a day. Caused protein (fibrin) in urine by damaging nephrons in kidney. No longer taking it.
- CPAP Working / Worked
- Pressure was too high; necessary still, but down to 12 cm. pressure. Working again. It's a constant battle to keep up with my changing condition.
- Lyrica Not Working
- Worked too well. Went up to 150 mg 3 x day, falling asleep all the time. Back to 75 mg twice a day, and still too much in terms of side effects. Tried 75 mg twice a day. Caused weight gain, edema, water retention. Nerve inflammation calmed down, don't know why. Quit taking it. Side effects too difficult to deal with--makes me excessively sleepy.
- Synthroid Working / Worked
- 112 mcg daily. Throat is opening back up, so goiter must be shrinking, singing back to my expectations. Been gaining weight again, TSH up again.
- Topamax Too Soon to Tell
- Weight gainwater retention due to Lyrica. Started Topomax in its place 50mg bid eventually yesterday. Had to taper off Lyrica before beginning to titrate up to dosage over the next 10 days. See rheumatologist again in 3.5 weeks mid September 2008
