Support Groups
Close Bipolar Disorder
First got sick at the age of 12 (major depressions with a seasonal pattern). Diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 19. Finally decided to recover and not let it control my life at the age of 25. Now working in mental health and planning to go back to grad school for a master's in counseling/psych.
Treatments
- Depakote Working / Worked
- Depakote was a miracle drug for me, but it made me gain weight. I'm now taking Lamictal instead, in an effort to minimize weight gain (maybe even lose a little, if I'm lucky!)
- Group Therapy Working / Worked
- Lamictal Working / Worked
- Currently taking Lamictal. Just started a few weeks ago. So far it seems to be working.
- Zoloft Working / Worked
- It works for me... helps keep my depressions at bay.
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- I had a fabulous therapist who helped me unravel some trauma issues in my life. His help in my recovery from the trauma also helped inspire a belief in myself that I can manage my bipolar disorder, too.
Close Adoption
Type: Open AdoptionI relinquished my firstborn into an open adoption at her birth in 2001. I deeply regret my choice. As a result of the relinquishment, I now have symptoms of PTSD and fought hard to get through a major depressive episode. I also have another daughter my husband and I are parenting, younger than my relinquished daughter. I blog about my experiences and when I'm up to it, work in my spare time to reform infant adoption in the U.S. and advocate for biological parents' rights.
Treatments
- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- Guided imagery in particular helped me forgive myself and relieve the guilt I carried for a long time. My therapist also recommended EMDR, which I am still considering.
- Zoloft Working / Worked
- I have bipolar disorder, which is what these medications have been primarily prescribed for, but they also help with the adoption trauma symptoms.
- Support Groups Working / Worked
- There's nothing like talking to other natural moms and dads who understand the pain of adoption loss.
- Writing Working / Worked
- Telling my story from start to finish helped me process the events with my left brain instead of just my right. It also helps me stay connected with a community of adoption triad members and gives me a platform for some reform/advocacy work.

I have symptoms of PTSD from relinquishing my daughter for adoption in 2001. Most of the symptoms are now under control, and I do not believe I currently fit the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, but I do have some residual symptoms still.

- Psychotherapy Working / Worked
- Amazing therapist. He recognized the symptoms of trauma long before I did, and started doing trauma-appropriate therapy techniques with me, including guided imagery. He recommended EMDR. I'm still considering it... I'll be starting with a new therapist soon (psychiatrist referred me to someone in her own building), but if the new counselor doesn't work out, I'll be going back to my old one.
