Today's Weird Experiences Mood
Monday, March 2, 2009

Two seemingly unrelated things happened to my friends and family today:

1) My parent's garage was graffiti'd with swastikas and SS logos. There were at least 3 on their garage, and a bunch on other houses up and down the street.

2) My good friend received a gun he bought a few weeks ago.

For some reason, I find the events to be very connected right now. This major economic disaster has got me, and my friends, on edge - I can't help but have visions of break lines, crime and general disaster when I read the news every morning. Generally, I've been pretty against gun ownership, but in light of the difficulties we're all going to be facing this year, I feel somewhat naked and concerned, and grasping for control....perhaps a gun is one way to at least feel some control. To my non-gun-owning friends, you needn't worry - I'm not buying one tomorrow...but I understand the sentiment more.

As for the graffiti, it's very surprising to see this kind of activity here, in West Los Angeles. I think there's like a million Jews (my family representing just some of them) in this area, and I could perhaps imagine this kind of activity in a less diverse place, but here? Just seems odd...and I hope it's the work of some really stupid kids, and not much else.

Anyway, hate to dump on y'all, but we all have tough days....

Gawd....sorry to hear it. And no worries....your right to post your feelings. Your normal like the rest of us lol. Also...I was just showing someone here in town how back in the 30's the old vintage lamp posts have swastikas all around the bottom base of each lamp. The contractors were german from what I was told. Pretty interesting.....your entry reminded me of that. As for the economy.....ugh...it's hurting us here on the central coast of Cali...... =/

That is a little scary. The way I look at it, why should we let all the right wing nut jobs be the only guys with guns. I saw a couple cars with Obama stickers at the range today by the way so maybe I am not the only liberal who is packing heat.

I'm from L.A. area but now living in Texas. Here it is very common to carry a gun and have one in the house. It doesn't necessarily spew hatred, just protection for the family in a world that has a lot of bad in it. We also live in the country where I've shot snakes, skunks and racoons when I've HAD too. And I'm a woman! :) Yes, I can shoot a shotgun girls. There are certainly a lot of nuts out there in the world though and I'm sorry that you and your parents ran into some. Yes, hopefully they were some kids looking for some "fun?". But it is all over not just Calif. Maybe just predominate there and N.Y.

I was born and raised in rural north Texas, so guns have always been part of my life. I was also well trained by my grandfathers about gun safety. I do believe in Jefferson's quote, "Those who beat their guns into plowshares will toil for those who do not." An armed man is a citizen, an unarmed man is a subject. I had a Jewish friend of mine threatened because he openly opposed a Wind farm on his property, through the company building them. So much for trusting the feds, and I also oppose the wind farms, simply because they are being pushed here for,"our own good." I guess I am just clinging to my guns and religion, or my rights as a citizen of the USA.

We all have weapons and know how to use them. depending on where you live it is a nessecity of life. Like you I am afraid this will become much more prominate but owning a gun is just a measure of guarding your family, when done right!

it sounds like stupid kids! There was some of that graffiti done around St. Paul, too, and St. Paul is a pretty mild place to live. I know what you mean about being on edge during these uncertain economic times.

Gun sales have skyrocketed since Obama got in. Many fear that Obama will confiscate guns, and with good reason.

As for the hate messages....unfortunate. But let's keep in mind that hate works many different ways. Cyndi Sarnoff Ross refuses to get that women batter men as often as the converse. And Dr. Orange questions that men need a comparable program for their health, despite the 65% greater number of male deaths in 2006 from all fifteen of the fifteen leading causes of deaths in the USA. And...FBI stats show that there are seven times more occurrences of black-against-white interracial violence as the converse.
