    • About Me

I am a 43-year-old woman just diagnosed with papillary (sp?) thyroid cancer yesterday. I don't have all the facts or info yet, will get them first thing Monday morning but I'm very scared. I have a 15 year old son with autism, for me to leave him would be more than he could bear....

      From Nanette June 12, 2008

I have not been able to get on this site for some time. It would say that I was denied when I tried to sign in. I was instructed to try several different things and then yesterday I wrote them saying that it was bad to be part of a support group, read things that you felt you had some insight into helping someone and could not get on. I got a note this morning telling me what to do and it worked. I don't know what was wrong, because I had been on this support group for over a year. Hope you are feeling well. Let me hear from you.

    • Close Thyroid Cancer
      Type: Papillary Carcinoma

Dx in August '07. Total Thyroidectomy Sep '07. RAI Oct '07. Had horrible depression during dx and treatment. Surgery/RAI was difficult. As of Jan '08, I'm feeling better with only minor brain fog.

      Treatments

      Cytomel Working / Worked
I took Cytomel for 1 month following surgery, before I had to become hypothyroid for RAI treatment. I think it helped with energy level and depression, because as soon as it was time to stop taking Cytomel I felt terrible.
      Radiotherapy Working / Worked
Stayed in Hospital 48 hrs. The rules for RAI hospital stays vary by state and/or dosage given. Seems to have worked :-) Side effects- loss of taste & smell, dry mouth & nose (bloody noses due to the dryness) bad gas (PU). The symptoms went away after 6-8 weeks :-)
    • Close Colon Cancer

I'm a thyroid cancer survivor being tested for gardner's syndrome or fap, which eventually develops into colon cancer. genetic testing for fap takes about a month, will know then.

    • Open Pancreatic Cancer

My mother died in 1984 from pancreatic cancer at age 56. She was an active and vibrant woman before it struck. She started having stomach pains in Nov, dx and surgery in Jan, reoccurance in liver in June and passed away in Sept from a blood infection-no immune system left. So she lived 10 mos after dx. She had been a smoker for approx 10-15 years in her younger days but quit 20 yrs before pc dx. I pray they find a cure soon :-(

      Treatments

      Radiotherapy Somewhat Helpful
Gave mom a few more months, lots of vomiting though
      Whipple Procedure Working / Worked
Gave mom 9 more precious mos of life, not too bad side effects.
