Am now back home after my below the knee amputation of my left leg.
Am getting used to using a wheelchair and attending physotherapy once a week. I hope to get fitted with a prosthesis within the next few weeks when the wound has completely healed.
Amputation was recommended after having treatment over the last 3 years for a soft tissue sarcoma.
My first operation in a London hospital was in 2004 when a small tumour was removed just above the ankle of my left leg. After this I had a course of radiotherapy and returned to the hospital every 3 months for check up and X-Ray. Earlier this year I started getting pain and swelling in my ankle and an MRI scan showed the sarcoma had returned once again. A second operation was not recommended, it would have meant skin and tissue grafts and no radiotherapy as it was too near to the orginal site. As there was no evidence of cancer in any other part of my body my oncologist consultant said an amputation would be the best way of ensuring it would never return again - I hope he is right!
